Seed Heterogeneity in Dependence of Their Position on the Mother Plant in Lupinus albus L.

Abstract. Seed heterogeneity (regarding some main parameters) in dependence of their position on mother plant was found in a study conducted with 11 varieties of Lupinus albus L. At technological maturity, pods (respectively the seeds in them), situated in the lower (1st layer) and upper half (2nd layer) of 20 plants, selected randomly, were collected separately. The results of the conducted analyzes showed that 1000 seeds mass, germination, germ length and weight of the seeds from the 2nd layer were lower in comparison with those from the 1st layer by an average of 12.3, 4.2, 13.1 and 19.5%, respectively. In contrast, the crude protein content of the 2nd layer seeds exceeded the protein content of the 1st layer seeds by a relative value of 15.0%. The seedling vigour index, as a summary indicator for evaluation, showed higher viability of the seeds formed in the pods from the 1st layer (1028) compared to the vigour of the seeds from the 2nd layer (856).

Production of exopolysaccharide ethapolan by Acinetobacter sp. IMV B–7005 on fried oil and oil–containing mixed substrates

Abstract. Nowadays, the majority of microbial EPS are not produced on an industrial scale because of high cost and low yield of the target product. In this study, the cultivation conditions of Acinetobacter sp. IMV B–7005 for the efficient process of exopolysaccharide ethapolan synthesis on refined or cheaper waste oil and oil–containing mixed substrates were established. The production efficiency on the selected substrates was evaluated by the amount of synthesized ethapolan (g/l) and EPS–synthesizing ability (g EPS/g biomass). Regardless of the quality (sunflower, corn, olive, rapeseed) and type (after frying meat or potatoes) of waste oil in the biosynthesis medium, it was found that the polysaccharide synthesis and its rheological properties were at the level obtained using the refined substrate. Use of waste oil, especially mixed one, in mixture with molasses or acetate allows increasing the amount of synthesized EPS to 14–16 g/l. The obtained results show the possibility of developing a universal technology of ethapolan production on the oil–containing substrates and their mixtures, which is independent of the type and quality of the waste oil, as well as its supplier.

Abstract. Typhonium lineare is a rare plant species of Typhonium genus and found only in Southern Vietnam. The species has not been any research on its phytochemical composition and antimicrobial activity. In present study, the chemical constituents and antibacterial activity of ethanolic extract of rhizomes and aerial parts of T. lineare was firstly investigated by Liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC-MS) and disk diffusion methods, respectively. Consequently, six chemical constituents were reported from T. lineare aerial parts and rhizomes, including 5-(2’-methylpropyl)hydantoin, 5-(4’-hydroxybenzyl)hydantoin, uridine, cyclo(Leucyl-Tyrosyl), linolenic acid, gigantin and pheophorbide-a. Furthermore, the ethanolic extract of T. lineare rhizomes was not resistant to five studied bacteria whereas the extract from the aerial parts was proved to be able to resist against five bacterial strain, such as Bacillus cereus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella enteritidis and Salmonella typhimurium.

Medicinal plants as sources of selenium and natural antioxidants

Abstract. The beneficial synergism between selenium (Se) and other antioxidants on human health stimulates the search of new medicinal plants with high antioxidant activity (AOA) and Se accumulation levels. Using fluorimetric method of Se analysis and titrimetric method of total AOA determination monitoring was achieved of 53 species of herbs, 24 species of deciduous and evergreen trees and shrubs and 11 species of conifers grown on the Southern and South–Eastern coast of the Crimean peninsular. Two new Se–hyperaccumulators were indicated among deciduous trees: Tamarix ramosissima and Paliurus spina–christi with leaves Se content 6236 and 1800 µ–1 d.w. respectively. Among herbs 5 new hyperaccumulators were revealed: Artemisia draсunculus cv. Izumrudny, Anthemis tranzscheliana, Cota tinxtoria, Astragalus arnacantha and Limonium gerberi with Se accumulation levels of 23460, 9479, 960, 4110, and 1926 µ–1 d.w. respectively. Medians of Se levels reached 97 µ–1 for conifers, 86.5 µ–1–for deciduous plants and 61 µ–1 – for herbs with the appropriate AOA values: 67, 70. and 49.3 mg–GAE.g–1 d.w. respectively. Tamarix was the only plant with both Se hyperaccumulation abilities and high AOA level (212 mg–GAE.g–1 d.w). High AOA (188–256 mg–GAE.g–1 d.w) and relatively high Se levels (193–236 µ–1) were demonstrated for Pistacia atlantica and Cotinus coggygria.

Yield, yield components and some quality properties of fenugreek cultivar and lines

Abstract. Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum–graecum) belongs to fabaceae family. It is evaluated as multipurpose and commercially important spice plant. It has lots of health benefits and some of them are listed as diabetes control, decreasing blood sugar levels, cholesterol levels, inflammation, loss of appetite. This research was carried out to determine the yield and some quality properties of one cultivar (Gürarslan) and 2 fenugreek lines (line–1 and line–2) in 5 different sowing dates (October, November, December, March and April) under Ordu ecological conditions during 2013–2014 years. Experiments were designed and applied in split block design with three replications. Plant height, pod number per plant, seed number per pod, pod length, branche number per plant, 1000 seed weight, biological yield, seed yield, harvest index, crude protein content, crude oil rate were determined as 30.13–63.90 cm, 3.0–11.33 number, 21.33–68.33 number, 10.50–14.0 cm, 1.0–4.33 number, 17–20.82 g, 161.48–378.44 kg da–1, 45.64–86.98 kg da–1, 19.91–43.08%, 9.64–10.32% and 2.26–4.93%, respectively. Significant differences were determined among the fenugreek cultivar and lines except crude protein content and crude oil rate. While the highest seed yield and crude oil rate were found in line–1 in 2nd sowing time, crude protein content was obtained in Gürarslan cultivar in 2nd sowing time and line–1 in 5th sowing time. Correlation matrix and PCA were conducted to find relationship among the examined properties. Generally, line–1 can be selected for crude protein content and crude oil in 5th sowing time and line 2 can be chosen for seed yield 2nd sowing time.

Analysis and Simulation of AM2 Model for Anaerobic Digesters

 Abstract. The simulation of anaerobic bioreactors of batch type for the methane production according to the AM2 mathematical model reveals a strong sensitivity of the results (variation of the concentrations of substrates, bacterial evolution and flow of methane production) with respect to the variations of the model parameters. To highlight this sensitivity, we undertook an extensive literature review that has actually shown a dispersion of the model parameters as given and estimated by different authors. This is due, probably, to the complexity of biotechnology phenomena, to the variety in the composition of the substrate and to other factors influencing the experimental conditions (pH, temperature, etc.). An “average” estimation of the model parameters based on the literature was determined and was used to simulate the operation of the bioreactors. A comparative analysis of this model is performed enabling to show the variability of the system parameters and its influence on the methane production. By fitting the shape of the simulated model to that of experimental results given by the literature, we extract some average parameter values that can be used later on to characterize bioreactor systems in more or less similar conditions.

Chemical constituents and antibacterial activity of essential oil of Vitex rotundifolia from Southern Vietnam

 Abstract. In present study, we identified the chemical composition of essential oil which was isolated from the leaves of Vitex rotundifolia using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) analysis for the first time. A total of eighteen compounds were identified from essential oil, including sclareol (29.01 %); sandaracopimarinal (16.51 %); abietadiene (15.65 %); androsta–4,6–dien–3–one, 17–hydroxy–, (17β)– (8.12 %); abietal (6.45 %); dehydroabietan (5.02 %); verticiol (4.89 %) as major constituents. Furthermore, the antibacterial activity of the essential oils isolated from of the leaves of studied species has also been evaluated in the first time. The results proved that the essential oils could inhibit the growth of six pathogenic bacterial strains which the diameter of the growth inhibition zone of S. aureus, B. cereus, P. aeruginosa, S. enteritidis, S. typhimurium, E. coli were 27.3±0.6mm, 24.5±1.8mm, 24.3±0.8mm, 21.2±1.2mm, 8.8±0.3mm, 8.3±0.3mm, respectively.

Changes in elemental composition of Lewis carcinoma tumors in mice due to the supply of water–ethanolic extracts of Artemisia dracunculus and Pastinaca sativa

Abstract. Macro– and trace elements play an important role in biological processes, connected with malignant tumors emergence and development. Despite numerous data on elemental composition of tumour tissues up to date, the effect of plant preparations on elemental composition of tumors has been poorly investigated. In order to evaluate the elemental composition of mice Lewis carcinoma tumors under Artemisia dracunculus (tarragon) and Pastinaca sativa (‘black parsnip’) ethanolic extracts ingestion and to characterize mineral content in the above herbs, ICP–MS– method was used. The results demonstrated significant decrease of Сd, Pb, Hg, Al, Mn, Sr and Se concentrations in Lewis carcinoma tumors of mice under tarragon and ‘black parsnip’ ethanolic extracts loading compared to control group of mice without supply of herbs extracts. ‘Black parsnip’ and tarragon extracts also increased the concentrations of Ca, Si and V in tumors. Contrary to tarragon extract, which increased I content in tumors, ‘Black parsnip” significantly decreased the accumulation of I. Taking into account the anti–carcinogenic and anti–metastatic effects of ‘black parsnip’ and the pro–carcinogenic effect of A. dracunculus, their utilization in preventive medicine is supposed to arise interesting prospects.

Abstract. The phytochemical properties and antimicrobial activity of the herbal mixture used in folk medicine for thousands of years against hemorrhoids in aria Turkey, were highlighted in this manuscript. The aim of this study was to determine the In vitro phytochemical and antibacterial activity of traditional hemorrhoid herbal medicine. The results were as expected, it was not surprising, so the information from folk medicine was validated.
